Applications Now Open for Canada Disability Benefit!

By: Allan Mills, Executive Director

On June 20, 2025, applications open for the Canada Disability Benefit!

We have been waiting for the launch of this benefit for a long time. For some background, see our blog post from March 12th.

We strongly encourage you to apply (if you haven’t) for the Disability Tax Credit. This is one of the requirements of the Canada Disability Benefit, which will provide up to $200 per month to people with disabilities who are living in poverty. For a person relying on ODSP as their primary source of income, this is an essential top-up. On May 27th, Ontario finally announced that ODSP would not consider the CDB as “income”. This means there will not be any clawbacks to ODSP based on a person receiving the Canada Disability Benefit.

We know the DTC application is cumbersome and costs money. We wish it didn’t. But, I urge you to go for it. $200 a month adds up and we hope that the Federal Government will recognize that this amount needs to be significantly increased to achieve the stated objective of raising people with disabilities out of poverty.

We have partnered with KW AccessAbility, Sunbeam Developmental Resource Centre and Waterloo Region Family Network to raise awareness about the Canada Disability Benefit.

Check out this flyer for information on how to apply.
