August 2026 Days of Significance
Dear EAFWR Community,
Throughout August, several internationally recognized observances provide opportunities to learn, reflect, and engage with our local community. The resources below highlight organizations, programs, and opportunities available throughout Waterloo Region that align with each observance and support education, inclusion, well-being, and community connection.
International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples – August 9
This day recognizes the contributions, cultures, and rights of Indigenous Peoples around the world.
📚 Local Resources:
- Healing of the Seven Generations is an Indigenous-led organization that offers cultural programming, youth initiatives, community circles, traditional teachings, and wellness supports for Indigenous community members in Waterloo Region.
- White Owl Native Ancestry Association (WONNA) provides Indigenous cultural programming, youth groups, drumming, counselling, elder support, and community feasts in Kitchener.
- City of Kitchener Indigenous Reconciliation
International Youth Day – August 12
International Youth Day celebrates the voices, achievements, and leadership of young people.

oneROOF Youth Services provides housing support, mental health services, employment assistance, education support, and outreach services for youth in Waterloo Region.

YW Kitchener-Waterloo Youth Programs offers free youth leadership, wellness, self-confidence, arts, and recreation programs for youth in the region.

City of Kitchener Youth Programs provides year-round youth recreation, leadership development, arts programming, and community engagement opportunities.
World Humanitarian Day – August 19
World Humanitarian Day honours people who dedicate their time and efforts to supporting others and strengthening communities.

House of Friendship supports individuals and families through food programs, addiction services, housing supports, and community outreach.

The Working Centre offers employment support, community meals, housing assistance, and social enterprise opportunities throughout Waterloo Region.

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region provides meaningful volunteer opportunities while supporting food security across the region
International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition – August 21
This day encourages reflection on the history and legacy of slavery and the ongoing work toward equity, justice, and inclusion.
💡 Local Learning Opportunities:
- Kitchener Public Library offers collections, book lists, and educational resources related to Black history, anti-racism, and social justice.
- Waterloo Region Museum provides exhibits and educational programming that explore local and Canadian history from diverse perspectives.
International Overdose Awareness Day – August 31
International Overdose Awareness Day raises awareness about overdose, reduces stigma, and remembers those whose lives have been lost to drug poisoning.
📚 Local Resources:

Waterloo Region Integrated Drugs Strategy (WRIDS) provides harm reduction education, naloxone information, and community resources focused on overdose prevention. WRIDS has historically partnered with local organizations to host community remembrance and awareness events in Waterloo Region.

Sanguen Health Centre offers harm reduction services, outreach programs, and health supports for individuals affected by substance use.

Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington [provides addiction and mental health supports throughout the region.
