New Executive Director Announced

We have exciting news!

“Believe in what you do. Surround yourself with good, caring, creative people and then get out of their way.” – Maria de Boer, Executive Director

Earlier this year, we announced that our current Executive Director, Maria de Boer, is retiring. After more than 33 years of dedication to Disability Services, community development and making contributions to inclusion and belonging in Waterloo Region, the Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region Board of Directors wishes to acknowledge and thank Maria for her years of service. Both Board and staff wish Maria much happiness and all the best in exploring new possibilities at this point in her life.

Today, the Board is pleased to welcome Allan Mills as Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region’s new Executive Director.

Al comes to Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region with passion and excitement for the future of Developmental Services. Through 29 years of service at Christian Horizons, Al brings with him the experience and knowledge of a Vice President of Community Services, a District Executive Director, a Program Manager and a Direct Support Professional. He has been key in establishing new services and supports, including Family Retreats and Post-Secondary Education and Employment programs. EAFWR will also benefit from Al’s positive relationships and collaborative work with OASIS (Ontario Agencies Supporting Individuals with Special Needs). He is also a current member of the Developmental Services Housing Task Force. His BA in Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University and MA in Leadership from University of Guelph offer the foundational knowledge to be a great leader in this community.

As the incoming Executive Director, Al relishes the opportunity to dig deep into community development, and continue building enduring local partnerships with donors, supporters, volunteers and team members. He sees the work that Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region is already doing as a launch point for improving quality of service for the people we serve, and is committed to nurturing a Waterloo Region that sees each person as a full and contributing member to our community.

On a personal level, a good friend of Al’s has experienced some of the best years of his life, while living with EAFWR’s FamilyHome program. Through his friend’s experience, Al was significantly influenced by our community-oriented approach. His goal is to keep building supports with that approach.

Al begins his work with Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region on Monday October 16, 2017, with Maria finishing her position on Friday October 20, 2017. We will be honouring Maria’s retirement, with details to follow.

On behalf of Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region’s Board of Directors,

– Kevin Mendoza
