Autism Spectrum Disorder Training 

The Central West Respite Training Committee is putting on free workshops at Extend-A-Family!

Getting Ready for Camp -This workshop will provide an overview of ASD and focus on the importance of preparing not only the individual you are supporting but also preparing yourself as a worker. We will discuss Strategies to address difficulties in the areas of behaviour, communication and transition as they relate to camp. Participants will leave with a backpack filled with a notebook, pen, reuseable water bottle, hand sanitizer and starter sensory kit as well as a camp readiness checklist.

Intro to ASD - Through learning and discussion, this session introduces what it might be like to live in a world that is constantly offending one's ability to sort out the environment around them. Strategies are also reviewed to help people supporting an individual with an ASD, learn to be more effective in their interactions. This workshop is modified to meet the needs of the audience.

Visual Strategies - This practical session is designed to assist respite workers, parents, caregivers and agency staff with learning how to use and build visual aids. An overview of First-Then boards, visual schedules, choice boards and more. Participants will leave with a visual aid.

Life Span Changes- This workshop is designed to look at the major changes that can occur throughout a child's life as they journey through adolescence and into young adulthood. Young adults with ASD often loose motivation as the routine of childhood comes to an end and the demands and expectations of the adult world approach. This workshop is designed to help parents and workers take a detailed look at how to help them cope with these transitions.

Assisting Individuals with ASD to Cope With Anxiety -"You Have Nothing to Fear But Fear Itself" - Many individuals with ASD have high anxiety levels. This workshop will explore the possible reasons for anxiety and various techniques, strategies and resources to assist individuals on the spectrum to get to a calmer state. This workshop applies to all ability levels and age ranges of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

A light meal will be served at 5:30 and the training will begin promptly at 6pm (to 8pm)
